Nets of 3D shapes

We have been learning to draw nets of 3D shapes and then build them into the actual shape.

To make this work we had to draw it accurately first, and draw our shape with tabs (they help hold the sides together) then carefully cut it out and remember not to cut the tabs off!

We also used Polydron to help us visualise and make our 3D shape.

" I found sticking it together really tricky and would advise others to use tape instead of glue to fix it together" -Dylan.

" I really enjoyed the drawing of the net as we had to draw the shapes exactly right otherwise it wouldn't work!" -Ethan

Below is a picture of Kacey's net and Ethan and Dylan's fully made 3D shape.

Super Homework!

Well done to Ciaran who presented his homework brilliantly this week!

It was clear that Ciaran worked hard and took his time to present his work and answer his work correctly.

Super Ciaran!  1 housepoint!

Nets...in maths!

Today in maths we were making nets of  3D shapes. After we made the shape using Polydron we then carefully opened our shape to reveal the net!

Once we had a net of our 3D shape we got down to drawing them! We had to remember to draw our shapes the same size otherwise it wouldn't fit back together again.

Muggle Quidditch

Yesterday in English we were learning to read and follow instructions.

Instructions must include: adverbs, adjectives, time connectives, commas and they should really be in chronological order.

We read the instructions for playing Muggle Quidditch.

After we read the instructions (see below) we went out onto the Penfold to play a game! It was quite tricky to remember the rules but we kept referring back to our instructions.

Science experiment!

On Friday we had a tricky challenge!

Miss Groves mixed some water and flour and our challenge was to get the clear water back out of the mixture! It was hard! We had to really think!

We decided to sieve the mixture through tracing paper and paper towel.  I though that the paper towel would sieve the mixture better.

We used the Science enquiry skill of observing over time .

We left our mixture sieving all afternoon and over the weekend.

Which do you think sieved our flour and water mixture the best?

It was the paper towel!

Here are some pictures of our experiment.

Gymnastics!

Today we did gymnastics at Hemel Hempstead School.

We're learning to put a sequence together that must include: a beginning stance, a roll, movements from different body parts as well as different ways of travelling around.

By the end of our sessions at Hemel Hempstead School we will have a full sequence including going on the apparatus!

I cannot wait!

Big Writing

Big Writing is a time for quiet writing. The entire class writes about a topic given to us. First, we play some word games and have a VCOP warm up (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation). Then we look at examples of good writing and discuss why it's good and highlight all of the bits we like the best.

This week we were writing a recount about Christmas Day.

I enjoy Big Writing because it's nice and quiet and we get to plan before we write so we know exactly what we're going to write about.

Below is my Big Writing (which I did with no help!). I hope you enjoy reading it!

Composing music!

Today for our music lesson we were composing the music to the Gruffalo's child. We experimented with the musical instruments before composing a piece to a section of the story.

My group composed a piece of music to a section where the Gruffalo's child meets an owl. We made 'twit-two' noises with our mouths and used a shaker to represent the owl swooping down.

I really hope we get to compose music again!

Below are some pictures of us composing music.

In literacy today we were looking at extracts of Harry Potter. We were highlighting all of the really interesting words that are in the story and discussing and learning their meaning, I found lots!

My favourite interesting word was retaliate which means doing something back.

Tomorrow we're going to be writing our own sentences using the exciting vocabulary we found today.

Watch this space!

Book Reviews!

Today in literacy we have been learning to write good book reviews with lots of detail in them.
We had to include: The title of the book, the author, genre, a brief outline of the story, who the book is suitable for and lastly, we had to give our book a rating out of 5 stars.
We got to type our book reviews on laptops, finding pictures on the internet to give our book review an illustration was fun!
Below are our book reviews.

We hope you enjoy reading them!
